Cancer in Louisiana: Trends, Treatment and Prevention conference set for Nov. 21

Learn the latest on cancer trends, treatment and prevention during the Environment and Health Council of Louisiana’s free, public educational conference at Pennington Biomedical Research Center on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“Everyone from policymakers and researchers to anyone impacted by cancer is welcome to attend. We all want to know how to decrease cancer risks, detect it early and achieve positive outcomes. I’m thrilled to highlight several of the organizations that work everyday to improve treatment, survival rates, the environment and legal issues in Louisiana at our conference,” said Dr. John Doucet, EHCL president and dean of the College of Science and Technology at Nicholls State University.

“Cancer in Louisiana: Trends, Treatment and Prevention” will feature presentations from Dr. Peter DeCarlo, associate professor of environmental health and engineering at John Hopkins University, Dr. Justin Brown, Cancer Metabolism Program director and associate professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Dr. Donna Williams, director of the Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Program, the Louisiana Cancer Research Center and the Louisiana Tumor Registry.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about:
  • Latest on Dr. Decarlo’s research on ethylene oxide and pollution levels in Louisiana’s cancer alley
  • Latest developments in cancer research and treatment
  • Strategies for cancer prevention and early detection
  • How diet and exercise impact cancer risk and survivorship
  • Legal issues surrounding the accessibility of cancer treatment
  • How regulatory agencies address cancer and the effects of the environment on cancer
  • Resources and programs available to cancer patients
